Edo governorship poll tribunal begins sitting Tuesday

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will on Tuesday begin its inaugural sitting on the petition filed by candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the July 14 governorship election in the state, Charles Airhiavbere, challenging the victory of Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the poll.
The Secretary to the Tribunal, Mrs. J. J Aliyu, in a press statement, said the sitting will start at 9am.
Airhiavbere in his petition said the election was marred with fraud, irregularities, rigging and manipulations.

The PDP candidate also stated that he filed his petition to deepen democracy and the rule of law in the overall interest of the people of the state.
Airhiavbere said he was contesting the outcome of the elections because he discovered that the modern school certificate presented by Oshiomhole was not genuine.

In its preliminary objection, the Action Congress of Nigeria said the Electoral Act did not prescribed qualification to be met by a candidate seeking  election into the office of a governor.
Counsel to ACN, Ken Mozia (SAN), who filed the objection on behalf of the party, said the argument on the non- updating of voters register was a pre- election matter.
