Lassa fever: Nigeria gets $290,000 equipment from AfDB

The Federal Government has received a donation of health equipment worth $290,000 from the African Development Bank as a support for the fight against Lassa fever and other health challenges in the country. The equipment, which includes two ambulances, 30 Bajaj motorcycles, 34 safety boxes and among others, were procured by the World Health Organisation with funding from AfDB.

A statement issued on Friday by the Director (Media and Public Relations) in the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Boade Akinola, said the Country Director of WHO, Dr. Rui Gama Vaz, presented the equipment to the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, in Abuja. She said the equipment was initially to curtail the spread of Ebola epidemic but that since Nigeria had succeeded in curtailing Ebola, it could be used to address other epidemic. Also speaking, the Country Director of AfDB, Ousmane Dore, commended the Federal Government for the way and manner it handled the Ebola virus epidemic.

Fear grips residents as Lassa fever kills one in Lagos

There was palpable tension in Lagos on Friday as the state government confirmed two more cases of Lassa fever in the state, with one of the victims already dead.
This has brought the number of Lassa fever cases in the state to three, including the index case at Ahmaddiya Hospital in Ojokoro part of the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, Friday said the index case was responding to treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
The second victim, he said, is a 36-year-old lady, an indigene of Kogi State, who was first discovered at Naval Reference Hospital, Ojo on January 18, before she was referred to Mainland Hospital the same day, and has since been receiving antiviral medication.
According to him, the third person died because his case was presented late.

Jonathan visits First Lady in Germany

President Goodluck Jonathan has visited his ailing wife, Dame Pateince , who has been in a German hospital for about a month. The President, who flew out of the country on Sunday for New York to attend the first-ever High-Level Plenary Session of the United Nations on the Rule of Law, had a stopover in Germany. The First Lady was scheduled to accompany the President to the UN General Assembly, but she fell ill.
Her state of health could not be ascertained yesterday and it is still not known when she will return to Abuja.

Dame Patience was reported to have been flown out of the country on September 1, following an unstated health challenge. Various ailments have been attributed for her sudden disappearance from the Presidential Villa. Till date, there has not been any statement from the Presidency on Dame Patience’s health.

Federal health workers vow to continue strike

Health Workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Union have vowed to continue the nationwide strike which began in all federal hospitals on Monday until their demands are met. Acting National Chairman JOHESU, Felix Faniran, who spoke with our correspondent in a telephone interview on Wednesday, said the union was not happy with the non-skipping of health  workers on  CONHESS 10, non-payment of consultancy and specialist allowance and call/shift and other professional allowances.

Ailing First Lady’s aides can’t make calls

Nigerians may have to wait for a while to ascertain the condition of the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, following security censoring of some of the key aides who followed her to Germany for medical treatment.

But a source in government last night confirmed that the First Lady was a victim of food poisoning in Dubai .
The source said the fact-sheet indicated that she did not undergo any surgery in Germany, as reported by a section of the media.
The source said: "No one can actually talk on the state of health of the First Lady because those who followed her to Germany have been censored by security agencies.
"None of them has been allowed to establish telephone contacts with Nigeria to avoid a misrepresentation of the state of health of Her Excellency.

Patience Jonathan's medical trip update: Illness started in Dubai

The "food poisoning" condition that landed Mrs. Patience Jonathan in a hospital in Germany reportedly started in Dubai eleven days ago where she had gone to see a doctor because her hands were twitching.

Presidency sources said she had gone to Dubai after the recent African First Ladies Summit in Abuja, an event that imposed an unfamiliar and grueling schedule of meetings and late nights on Mrs. Jonathan, saying she needed some rest.
