Lee Soo-Min of South Korea surprised even himself with a dazzling putting display Saturday to snatch a three-stroke edge heading into the final round of the inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia.

Lee shot a seven-under-par 64 to leapfrog 36-hole leader Nathan Holman of Australia and pre-tournament favourite Danny Willett of England.

Lee, 22, is now at 15-under par, three shots ahead of Marcus Fraser of Australia, who finished the day with a five-under 66 at the par-71 Royal Selangor Golf Club.

Playing in just his second European Tour event, Lee rolled in nine birdies, including four straight on the back nine when he insists he was merely trying to get it close, only to watch the putts drop.

“After making birdie, I gained more confidence and continued to make more birdies,” he said.

If Lee can hold on Sunday to win the $3 million tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, it would be his maiden triumph outside of South Korea.

While Lee thrived, the stifling 33-degree (91 Fahrenheit) heat seemed to sap other key contenders.

Holman, the recent Australian PGA champion, had established himself as the man to beat in Malaysia with an impressive tee-to-green game the first two days.

But the 24-year-old long-hitter struggled Saturday, dropping four shots by the 11th.

A late surge brought Holman to within a stroke of Lee, but he stumbled into the clubhouse with a triple-bogey on 18 after sailing a fairway bunker shot into a pond.

Coach Stephen Keshi is considering having any of Victor Anichebe of Everton, Turkey-based Michael Eneramo or Joseph Akpala of Werder Bremen to fill Emmanuel Emenike’s role in the Super Eagles attack ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in June. The need to secure a replacement for Emenike arose because the attacker returned to the treatment table last week after sustaining a hamstring injury during a league match in Russia. His latest condition will rule him out of action for six weeks, according to Spartak Moscow doctors.

Emenike was first sidelined for about two months with a hamstring injury he picked up against Mali in the semi-final of the recent Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Apart from the World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia in June, Nigeria will also feature in the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil next month.

Premier League finances: Accounts reveal £1.6billion spent on wages

More than two thirds of the Premier League‘s record £2.4bn income in 2011-12 was paid out in wages, according to the most recently published accounts of all 20 clubs. The Guardian’s annual special report of Premier League clubs’ finances shows they spent £1.6bn on wages last season, most of it to players.
The wage bill accounted for 67% of clubs’ turnover, a similar level to the two previous years – wages were 68% of income in 2009-10, and 69% in 2010-11.
The £1.6bn for 2011-12 follows £1.5bn in 2010-11, and £1.4bn in 2009-10, meaning that over the past three years Premier League clubs have spent £4.5bn on wages alone. That figure does not include money paid to agents, which was an additional £77m between October 2011 and September 2012.
The accounts show clubs are generally becoming better run financially. In 2009-10 of the 20 Premier League clubs made an overall loss of £484m. In 2010-11 that figure had fallen to £361m. In 2011-12, 12 of the 20 clubs made losses but the overall figure was £205m.
This was largely accounted for by Manchester City, who reduced their record loss of £197m in 2011 to £99m last year. Manchester United carry a debt of £420m, on which they paid £50m interest. Overall net debt owed by the 20 clubs was £2.4bn, much of it owed to owners.
The clubs do not separate the wage bill in their annual accounts between players, senior employees and other staff but it is beyond doubt that players account for the bulk of their spending.
