ANPP Seeks Remedy against Flood Disasters

he All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has asked the Federal Government to take urgent measures to control flood disasters across the country.
The party suggested the construction a buffer dam at the outflow location of the Lagdo Dam which is within a short distance away from our boarder with Cameroun.
In a statement issued Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Emma Eneukwu, the party lamented the unrelenting barrage of floods in several parts of the country.It referred to the damages caused by rampaging flood in  states like Lagos, Oyo, Katsina, Yobe, Plateau, Niger, Jigawa, Kaduna, and some parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Eneukwu regretted that in all the flooding incidents, many lives and properties have been lost with serious implications on the economic survival of the affected areas.
"The ANPP therefore calls on the Federal Government to immediately commence the construction of a buffer dam at the outflow location of the Lagdo Dam in order to contain the water from the River Basin as even meteorological reports predict worse weathers in the future.
"We also advocate for the formation of a National Environment (Advisory) Committee, which will comprise critical stakeholders in order to catalyse a nationwide environment-awareness culture," he said.
The party recalled the most recent flooding in Adamawa State which was as a result of sudden release of excess water from the Lagdo Dam by the Cameroonian authorities.
It said over 100 communities in 13 local government areas were affected while about 16 persons lost their lives and more than 10,000 people rendered homeless.
According to Eneukwu, it would not be enough for agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to give early warning signals without any measure put in place to prevent the resultant losses.
He said ANPP would want Nigerians to also imbibe the culture of environmental awareness, alertness and cleanliness in order to avert the ugly consequences of flood disasters.
The ANPP spokesman said the PDP government has failed to exhibit the right attitude in tackling the nation's environmental challenges.
He said the party believed that with a little more proactive measure taken by the government, the country would have been saved a lot of resources in terms of unnecessary collateral damages incurred through these environmental disasters.
