UNITED Nations (UN) leader, Ban Ki-moon, has lauded the election of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as new president of Somalia, but said he must quickly appoint a government.
Ban congratulated Mohamud on his success in winning a vote by Somalia's new federal parliament and commended the "peaceful" process, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said in a statement.
"The secretary general encourages the new president to move expeditiously, to appoint an inclusive, accountable government that can begin the work of peace-building in the country," the statement added.
About 20,000 African Union troops protect the government in Mogadishu, which is battling Islamist rebels as well as crippling political infighting inside the transitional parliament. Huge amounts of foreign aid also keep the government going.
